IPOH: A 33-year-old lorry driver and his eight months pregnant wife were charged separately at a Magistrate’s Court here with obstructing a policeman from discharging his duties, and insulting him.

The couple were arrested on Dec 6 after a video taken by the wife showing a verbal altercation with the police officer had gone viral.


The accused M. Kevin Raj pleaded not guilty and claimed trial under Section 186 of the Penal Code before magistrate Noor Azreen Liana Mohd Darus on Monday (Dec 9).

According to the charge sheet, Kevin had obstructed the duties of Sub-Inspector Zulkifli Md Asid on Dec 5 at about 9.45am along Jalan Pasir Puteh-Lahat by refusing to follow his instructions to follow him to the police station so that a traffic summons could be issued.


If found guilty, he could be jailed a maximum of two years, handed a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both.

His counsel K. Nathan requested for a lower bail stating that his wife was pregnant.

Noor Azreen Liana then fixed bail at RM3,500 with one surety, with the accused required to report to the nearest police station monthly, and his passport handed over to the court.

Earlier at a different magistrate’s court, Kevin pleaded guilty to seven traffic offences committed between 2003 and 2014.

He was fined a total of RM1,700 in total by magistrate Nabihah Mohd Noor.

In the same court, he pleaded not guilty to a drug abuse charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 committed on Sept 5 last year.

Bail was set at RM3,200.

In relation to the video that went viral, Kevin’s 29-year-old wife R. Loganayagi had two charges against her - one for insulting the Sub-Inspector, and the other for failing to produce her MyKad when requested.

According to the charge sheet, , she had on purpose insulted the Sub-Inspector by accusing him of asking for money on the same, date, time and at the same location.

She was charged under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which she claimed trial. Bail was set at RM1,000.

However, she pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to produce her MyKad, where a fine of RM500 was imposed.

In an unrelated charge to the video that went viral, Loganayagi pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief on Oct 14 this year, along Jalan Rishah Permai, Sg Pari, Buntong by using a helmet to hit the windscreen of a car which cracked and caused the owner RM700 in losses.

Bail was set at RM2,500.

She posted bail and paid the fines, Kevin has yet to do so as of press time.

The cases in relation to the videos that went viral were prosecuted by DPP Fadhli Ab Wahab, while the couple were represented by Nathan.
