PETALING JAYA: Operations at the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant, which was previously stopped due to odour pollution in the raw water source, is now back to normal.

Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said operations at the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant resumed at 1pm on Monday (Dec 23).

However, the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plant still remains inoperational, said Air Selangor's corporate communications head Abdul Halem Mat Som in a statement.

“The treatment and production of treated water supply will take a little time before the supply becomes more stable to be delivered to consumers. Air Selangor will update consumers on the latest developments from time to time.

“As further measures to ensure the odour pollution does not increase in the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant, Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) is also taking proactive measures by pumping water from Tasik Idaman to Sungai Semenyih in order to stablise and reduce the odour pollution.

“Air Selangor hopes that such pollution will not recur, ” he said on Monday.

Air Selangor will also continue to supply water using tankers in order to help consumers cope with the unscheduled water cut.

Abdul Halem said 11 operation centres in four districts have been placed to help consumers get updates on the water tanker distribution schedule.

“Consumers are also urged to use public pipes made available in 14 different locations to get their water supply. Apart from that, Air Selangor is also distributing 5-litre drinking water to consumers, especially those in non-landed residential areas.

“As of noon Monday (Dec 23), some 6.930 bottles of drinking water have been distributed, ” he added.

Abdul Halem also urged consumers to be patient, adding that Air Selangor is taking proactive measures to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

Consumers will also be provided with up-to-date information via the Air Selangor mobile app, Facebook and its website www.airselangor.com.

Operations at both the water treatment plants were stopped at 7.15am on Saturday (Dec 21) after pollution was detected in Sungai Semenyih.

The closure has affected some 336,930 account holders in 366 locations in Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

The dumping of waste into manholes in Bandar Bukit Mahkota had forced the closure of the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant twice in three months.

Oily residue was found in a Bukit Mahkota manhole last week, which LUAS confirmed to be the source of odour pollution that forced the shutdown of the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants, as well as the Bandar Bukit Mahkota sewage treatment plant on Saturday.
