More consumers affected as Sg Semenyih plant remains inoperative

PETALING JAYA: The Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant is still inoperative more than 24 hours after it was shut down following an odour pollution in Sungai Semenyih stemming from a sewage plant.

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd corporate communication chief Abdul Halem Mat Som said more consumers had been affected following the closure of another plant in Bukit Tampoi at 3.30pm on Saturday (Dec 21).


"Stop-work order at both plants have affected supply to 336,930 units in 366 areas," he said in a statement.

Affected areas include Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang.


Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) and relevant agencies including Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) are clearing odour-causing effluent from manholes near the sewage treatment plant.

"Works to reduce odour in Sungai Semenyih using activated carbon are also being done," he said.

Operations at the treatment plants can only be resumed when the level of pollution is reduced to zero.

Halem said tankers were being deployed to supply water to critical premises first, including hospitals.

However, people affected by the disruption in water supply can get water at 11 one-stop service centres and public taps round-the-clock. The locations of these service centres are listed on Air Selangor's Facebook page.

"Air Selangor will take some time to rectify the problem, but efforts are taken to hasten the recovery process," he said.
