PETALING JAYA: The Dong Jiao Zong educationist group has cancelled an event to discuss the implementation of a Jawi calligraphy module in vernacular schools.

The group said they were served a court order on Friday (Dec 27) and would cancel the event which was supposed to take place at the New Era University College on Saturday (Dec 28).

It also requested all invitees not to show up at the venue on Saturday.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof said the court order was handed over to Dong Jiao Zong at around 5pm on Friday (Dec 27).

"It is specifically an order for the event... not to go on.

"We urge the public not to attend the meeting or any gathering related to it, organised by any non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or any party," he said in a statement on Friday.

ACP Ahmad Dzaffir said many police reports were lodged against the planned meeting.

"Kajang police headquarters applied for the court order for the sake of maintaining public order and safety.

"We want to prevent any untoward incident that might jeopardise public safety and cause unrest," he added.

He urged everyone to abide by the court order and the law.

"We will take stern action against anyone who fails to follow it," ACP Ahmad Dzaffir said.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that the planned gathering over the Jawi calligraphy module issue would further divide the country.

Dong Zong central committee member Low Chee Chong was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying that the meeting was only open to representatives of Chinese NGOs and not members of the public.

"This is a meeting that will discuss education topics and the Jawi script issue. The meeting (is called) to express the stance (of Chinese NGOs) and it is not a racial gathering," he was quoted as saying by the news portal.
