PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali has confirmed that he will be resigning from his post as Umno disciplinary board chairman.

The former attorney general of Malaysia said this when contacted to confirm on the news of his resignation from the post, first published by Astro Awani on Thursday (Dec 26).

Astro Awani in the report said that Apandi made the decision to resign over the sudden postponement of the disciplinary proceeding against former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The proceeding was to take place on Thursday, following supreme council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam's report alleging that the Sembrong MP had tried to be the "middleman" to get Umno lawmakers to support the leadership of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Apandi, when contacted by the Star, said that he wanted to retain his dignity and integrity.

"The party leaders can hold on to their political posts, I want to hold on to my dignity and integrity," he said.

He confirmed that he will formally send Umno a letter of his resignation from the post.

"The resignation is by way of a letter, which I will sign upon my return from my vacation," he said.

He, however, added that he will still continue to be an ordinary member of Umno.
