PETALING JAYA: Don’t panic if you see people drifting aimlessly, pointing their smartphones at the sky – they’re not looking for airborne Pokemon but are merely checking out the annular eclipse, which returns to Malaysia’s skies for the first time in 21 years.

The rare “ring of fire” started making its impact felt after 11am on Thursday (Dec 26), and will go on until about 3pm.

The last such eclipse occurred on Aug 28,1998.

An annular solar eclipse happens when the moon covers the centre of the sun, creating a “ring of fire”.
