BUKIT MERTAJAM: A group of Anwar Ibrahim loyalists today questioned lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla for representing an ex-staff of the PKR leader in a sexual misconduct probe launched by Bukit Aman this week.

Pro ’98 Reformis Malaysia accused Haniff of “gutter politics” for representing Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, who was questioned by police over claims that Anwar had tried to outrage his modesty last year.

The group also urged Haniff to resign as chairman of the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda).

“If Haniff does not want to stop this gutter politics, he should resign from Perda and berambus (get lost) from Penang,” said the group’s Penang spokesman Amir Ghazali.

Speaking to reporters at Yayasan Aman, a PKR-linked outfit, Amir said Haniff should instead focus on reforming the federal body.

He questioned Haniff’s claim that he was acting professionally.

“Does he want a bigger leadership post, by doing this?

“He appears to be more willing to use his legal expertise to become a tool of a certain leader,” he added.Haniff Khatri Abdulla.

Amir asked if Haniff, who had appeared for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was tasked with destroying Anwar’s image.

“Haniff must ask himself, who does he represent? He is the chairman of a federal body, can he do something like this?”

Haniff has hit out at “conspiracy theorists” in the wake of Bukit Aman’s probe into Yusoff’s police report and statutory declaration.

Yusoff, 26, was a research assistant at Anwar’s office in Petaling Jaya until earlier this year, when he claimed he was assaulted by the Port Dickson MP’s political secretary, Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak. He has since slapped a civil suit against Farhash, although Farhash denies the accusations.

At a press conference streamed on Facebook Live on Dec 4, Yusoff claimed that a senior politician had committed a crime against him which he described as “un-Islamic, vile, insidious and morally repugnant”.

Bukit Aman has since summoned Yusoff twice to record his statement.

Anwar strongly denied the claim, calling it baseless and politically motivated. He also instructed his lawyer Ramkarpal Singh to take legal action.
