PETALING JAYA: Johor police have denied claims by a woman who said she was a refugee in an European country now because she was tortured by police while in Malaysia.

The woman, who identified herself as Lily, made the claims in a viral video. A Caucasian man, said to be from Canada, was seen beside her in the video and later claimed to be her husband.

Johor police chief Comm Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd told Star Online that the allegations were untrue and she had actually been beaten up by her family members and not the police.

He added the woman had been dealing with problems with her family since 2011 and that eight police reports had been lodged about the matter.

“Three of these reports were lodged by the woman herself and the rest by her father,” he said.

Police said the woman left the country on Feb 18, 2011 using her passport. In 2014, she renewed her passport at the Malaysian embassy in London and it will expire in 2019.

The eight-minute video clip uploaded to the “Polaris Northern Star” YouTube channel on May 9, showed her Malaysian passport and her refugee passport.

The couple made an appeal to the new government and new Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to help Lily return to Malaysia.

The man claimed police had threatened to murder both of them years ago.

Lily, who said she was a Sarawak Melanau, claimed she fell victim to slavery and human trafficking in Johor Bahru.

“I am fleeing from corruption from Johor Bahru. The police tried to kill me. They actually set up the trap to kill me,” she said in the video message.
