KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Mohamad Nordin has been announced as the new Director-General (D-G) of Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM), effective next Thursday.

The 58-year-old will replace Tan Sri Othman Mustapha who is due for mandatory retirement on May 16.

The Public Service Department (JPA) has consented to Mohamad Nordin's appointment following the end of Othman's seven-year contract with JAKIM.

In a statement, Othman said Mohamad Nordin has received his letter of appointment at a ceremony held on May 7.

"With his credibility, knowledge and vast experience in managing Islamic matters in the country, coupled with his high integrity, I am confident and I trust he can continue JAKIM's vision and mission to ensure it delivers the best service to the people in this country. Congratulations," Othman said.

Mohamad Nordin previously held the post of JAKIM deputy D-G for policies.

"I would also like to express my gratitude to the Malaysian Government that had trusted me to serve as JAKIM D-G for seven years.

"I pray that the Malaysian government, specifically the Public Service will continue to excel in serving religion, race and country," Othman added.

Mohamad Nordin received his early education at the Klang Islamic college in Selangor.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Islamic Studies (Usuluddin) and a Master's Degree in Islamic Civilisation from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

He has served in the public service for 34 years, with his first appointment as an Islamic matters officer in January 1984. © New Straits Time
