Slashed sisters out of danger, but still in ICU

MALACCA: The two sisters who were critically injured in the shocking triple murder in Bertam are out of danger and in stable condition.

Malacca police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ramli Din said Noor Haslinda Diyana Hassan, 26, and Nuraqedah Aeina Hassan, 24, were still being warded at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Malacca Hospital.

“I was told the sisters are stable and being closely monitored by the doctors,” he said yesterday.

Earlier, at 11.30am, the bodies of the three victims slashed by a member of the family were buried in a single grave at the Bertam Malim Mausoleum.



Some 300 people, including relatives, friends and community leaders, attended the funeral of Hassan A. Wahab, 72, his wife Mariah Baharin, 60, and their son Muhd Basir Taufeq, 22.

Tears flowed at the funeral after the last rites were conducted at Al-Faizin Mosque in Kampung Bertam Malim.



Under probe: The murder suspect arriving at the Ayer Keroh courthouse in Malacca. He has been remanded for one week.

The three victims were murdered at their home in Jalan Sidang Daif Kampung Bertam Malim at about 6am on Thursday.

A 26-year-old suspect, who was arrested by police at the Bukit Rambai Mosque five hours after the grisly murder, was remanded for a week.

Mariah, the Tangga Batu Wanita Umno division chairman, was actively involved in preparations for the National Day celebration, including the giving away of 59 bicycles by the Lions Club of Tanjung Bidara on the eve of National Day, in Jalan Hang Tuah here.

The club’s president, Chew Chert Fong, said he was delighted when Mariah lent support for the giveaway but saddened on her sudden demise.

“We started the bicycle project to encourage the multi-racial unity espoused by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.

“We work closely with the state government and Malacca Parents in Education Action Group (Magpie) to identify deserving students,” he said.
