Health issues forced President Rodrigo Duterte to skip two events in Eastern Visayas on Thursday afternoon, contradicting a Palace spokesman's statement that he probably just wanted some personal time.

Speaking before the military's Eastern Mindanao Command in Panacan, Davao City on Friday, Duterte said he suffered a "terrible headache" on Thursday morning that he blamed on his misaligned spine — a result of a motorcycle accident years ago.

"I had this terrible headache. This is because of the misaligned somewhere in my spine when I met an accident when I was 67 years old in a motorcycle spill," Duterte, 71 and a motorcycle enthusiast, said.

He said hours before the event, his "spinal thing" went "crazy" again, resulting in severe migraine.

"I vomited in the morning so I said I could not make it," Duterte said.

Duterte was supposed to visit the wake of PO1 Gary Cabaguing, the policeman killed in an anti-drug operation in Samar, and the other policemen and soldiers who were wounded in the performance of their duties. He said he really wanted to visit and give them a snappy salute and thank them for their service to the country.

Asked why Duterte decided to cancel his attendance to the two events, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella told GMA News Online that the President may just want to have some personal time.

At the start of the campaign period, Duterte was not able to attend an event in Pasig City even though he was already at the venue reportedly because of migraine.

His camp initially denied that he was brought to the hospital, but Duterte himself later on admitted that he was taken to the hospital and explained that headaches are not new to him since he suffered a slipped disc.

Duterte also previously revealed that he has Buerger's disease, a condition that causes constriction of the blood vessels due to nicotine, and Barrett's esophagus, a disease involving the tissue in the esophagus. —KBK, GMA News
