Student’s ‘doubles match’ with Lee goes viral

PETALING JAYA: A student has found herself the unlikely object of fame after her social media posts on national shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei went viral.
Ika Syazwani’s Facebook entry, “Congrats my twin! #DatoLCW” was screencapped and widely shared on social media when netizens noticed that she bore an uncanny resemblance to Lee.
The jovial Universiti Utara Malaysia student takes the attention in her stride.
“Perhaps it’s because we have a similar facial structure,” said Ika, who explained that she got her looks from her Chinese grandmother.
This is not the first time she has received attention for her resemblance to the shuttler.
Pictures of her went viral in 2013 and again after Lee’s silver in the Rio Olympics.
“The whole thing is funny. I did not expect it to become famous like this,” she said, adding that she also received brickbats which she pays no heed to.
Ika followed the Olympic final between Lee and China’s Chen Long avidly. She had also posted Facebook updates during the semi-final between Lee and arch-rival Lin Dan.
She is a huge fan of her doppelganger and gushed over Lee’s performance in Rio.
“Datuk Lee is in top form. I was so excited, I even felt like going to Rio. It was even more exciting when Datuk Lee made it to the final. I felt so proud,” she told The Star Online.
“During the final, he looked like he was tired. Perhaps he did not get enough rest because of the semi-final. Overall, Datuk Lee is the best. Even though it was a silver medal we know that he is one of the best players in the world. Congratulations once again,” she said.
The 24-year-old mathematics and statistics major plays badminton occasionally but is more interested in automotive sports, like drag racing and drifting.
After her pictures went viral, Ika received a flurry of friend requests on Facebook and even strangers were asking for her phone number.
