Social media has been abuzz with a photograph of a signboard with a message forbidding couples from sitting together in Taman Jubli

SUNGAI PETANI: Social media has been abuzz with a photograph of a signboard with a message forbidding couples from sitting together in Taman Jubli here.

The signboard which reads “Dilarang pasangan untuk duduk berdua-duaan atau cuba membuat maksiat di kawasan ini” (couples are forbidden from sitting close together or involving in vice activities in this area), also has the Majlis Perbandaran Sungai Petani Kedah Darul Aman (MPSPK) logo on it.

When contacted, MPSPK councillor Ko Hung Weng said he had brought up the matter during the council meeting yesterday upon learning of the existence of the signboard on social media a few days ago.

“As far as I know, there’s only one such signboard in Taman Jubli.

“The setting up of this signboard was never brought up during the council meetings. It can cause a misunderstanding. The message on the signboard is also not clear if it applies to married couples as well,” he said yesterday.

Ko, who is from MCA, said he would seek clarification with the council’s Landscape Department.

He added the signboard was meant for Muslims and did not refer to non-Muslims.

Ko, however, said the proper way to discourage vice and immoral behaviour should be inculcated through religious education.
