Police: Most shooting cases in Malaysia involve murder-for-hire groups
KUALA LUMPUR: Most shooting cases in the country involve elements of hired killers.
This was the conclusion derived from an analysis conducted on ballistic evidence police had gathered from the various crime scenes and victims.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said analysis by police's Forensic Unit revealed that the same firearms were used in many cases.
He said police, from its initial investigation, believe that there are several small groups active in offering murder-for-hire services nationwide.
Investigators also found that several of the cases are connected to triads.
On the shooting case in Setapak last week, Noor Rashid said police have formed a special task force to probe the case.
He said police believe that they will be able to identify the shooters soon and take action against them.
On the crackdown against gangsterism and triads, Noor Rashid said police will soon launch its second round of Op Cantas Khas.
The Op Cantas Khas 2 was planned with improvements based on its study on the previous operation.
He said it will involve the federal police's special operation teams - Special Task Force on Organised Crime (Stafoc), Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting) and Special Task Force for Anti-Vice, Gaming and Gangsterism (Stagg).
