Save Malaysia aims to present royalty with one million signatures by May
PETALING JAYA, April 19 ― The Save Malaysia movement aims to get a million signatures for its Citizens’ Declaration by next month to petition the royalty to intervene in the political situation in Malaysia.
The movement's secretariat chief Datuk Kamaruddin Jaffar said today that they aimed to present the signatures to the Conference of Rulers that is set to meet on May 11 and 12.
“The objective of this movement is to collect a million Malaysian signatures to be presented to the ‘Mesyuarat Majlis Raja-Raja’ which is set to meet on May 11-12,” he said in a press conference today, referring to the Conference of Rulers.
The PKR lawmaker added that the movement so far has collected a quarter of a million signatures.
“Technically accounted for is around 253,000 signatures, but more broad counting is around 300,000 signatures all around,” Kamaruddin explained.
“At the rate we are going, a quarter million has been met. We believe from the support we have, we will meet it,” he added.
The Tumpat MP said the movement has not decided how the Citizens’ Declaration is to be handed to the royalty, but did not rule out former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's suggestion of driving a truck filled with the petitions to the Palace.
“He has mentioned that before and that shows his commitment to the cause. I'm sure he will do it,” Kamaruddin said.
Parti Amanah Negara's (Amanah) Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad said the Save Malaysia bipartisan group was petitioning the royalty as the movement believed the rulers were concerned about the Malaysian political scenario, noting their statement on state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) last October.
“If you look at the statement from the Rulers, it show that they were concerned with [the] 1MDB issue. They started [the] ball rolling in October, November with their statement,” he said.
The movement also plans to have a series of roadshows throughout Malaysia starting in Johor on April 29 and ending in Terengganu on June 3.
According to former Umno leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, Save Malaysia will organise roadshows at Kedah, Kelantan, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Malacca and Sabah as well and feature Dr Mahathir, former Kedah mentri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
