Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Ghaffar Rajab dismissed messages on social media claiming that Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar was upset over the arrest at the Air Itam police station on Saturday.
"The arrest was done according to standard operating procedures. We always have a good relationship with MACC and we have always upheld our integrity in such cases without fear or favour," he said.
He said the messages circulated via instant messaging app WhatsApp, purportedly by Khalid expressing displeasure over the MACC arrest, were fake.
"The IGP never sent such messages. These are fake," he said.
He said the MACC had followed all procedures by producing the proper documentation before arresting the five police officers at the police station.
The five police officers, comprising three officers of the lance corporal rank, a corporal and a female constable, were arrested to assist in investigations on a bribery case.
They have since been released on bail.
Abdul Ghaffar said they can still continue their duties as usual unless they are charged in court.
"They will be immediately suspended if they are charged in court," he said.
