IPOH: Those who received fake titles from bogus royalty claimants have been advised not to use or accept them.
Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir said it is considered a crime to accept such titles.
Earlier in January, Utusan Malaysia published a report of an unknown royal figure called “Maharaja Kinta” who had offered the titles and helped to include them in official identity documents of the recipients.
The report said those who wished to be awarded the titles were asked to pay between RM2,000 and RM5,000 as “charges” to allow the titles to be accepted by the National Registration Department (NRD).
"Let the police investigate the matter. I was not aware of such cases before this.
"They do not only receive yellow letters but also cards from these so-called royalties," adding that these documents were used to conduct businesses and procedures, which he said is a crime.
Dr Zambry spoke to the press after visiting a family in Jelapang, Ipoh to kick-off Chinese New Year celebrations in Perak.
The family whose house is infected by termites and always flooded when it rains will see their house rebuilt by Yayasan Bina Upaya (YBU).
Its owner 75-year-old Lin Chee Kin said he was happy to see Dr Zambry and his wife Datin Seri Saripah Zulkifli and hopes things would change after this.
"I am glad they are helping us out. This is the best Chinese New Year Gift," said the father of five children.
