Faiz's stunning goal shared around the world
PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian football player could find himself nominated for this year's Puskas award for the aesthetically best goal scored by a player.
Penang’s Mohd Faiz Subri's goal from a free-kick against Pahang in the Super League at the City Stadium on Tuesday was reminiscent of that scored by Brazilian Roberto Carlos in 1998 against France.
The kick from about 30m looked to be heading towards the top left corner of the goalmouth. The ball then swerved dramatically and ended up in the top right corner of the net.
The wicked swerve deceived the Pahang goalkeeper who could only watch the ball go into the net.
Faiz's wonder goal has been shared by football fans all over the world.
In the 101greatgoals.com Facebook page for instance, the video has been shared more than 31,000 times at time of writing.
Facebook used James Downie said "the wind was tame and Faiz’s freekick was just 'sheer spin'”.
“He sliced that ball beautifully,” he said.
The goal has also been highlighted by many new outlets from around the world including the Sydney Morning Herald, Bleacher Report and The Independent.
