Malaysians killed in Bangkok blast identified

BANGKOK: A Malaysian man and woman have been identified by the Thai media centre as among eight foreign nationals killed in the fatal bombing in Bangkok on Monday evening.

The two are Neoh Jai Aun and Lim Saw Sek, who are believed to have been on holiday in Bangkok.

It was reported earlier that the dead include two Chinese nationals, two Hong Kongers, two Malaysians, one Singaporean and five Thais. The rest have yet to be identified.

A total of 123 people were injured – Thais made up the largest number with 42 being treated, followed by 28 Chinese.


Thai prime minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha said Monday that the bomb planted at the Erawan Shrine, popular with tourists and Thais, was the “worst ever attack” on the kingdom.

Police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri said “the bomb aimed at killing as many people as possible as the shrine is crowded at around 6 to 7 pm.”

The attack did not match the tactics used by separatist rebels in southern Thailand, said Royal Thai Army chief and Deputy Defence Minister General Udomdej Sitabutr in a televised interview.The area, which is at a major traffic intersection flanked by five-star hotels and upscale shopping malls, remained cordoned off early Tuesday as police tightened security, with hundreds of schools closed and checkpoints thrown up across the city.
