More Tensions As PPIM Accuse Swindling As Part Of Chinese Trading Culturements

KUALA LUMPUR – At a time when many are urging to let emotions cool down over the weekend riot in Low Yat Plaza, a Muslim consumers group seem intent to keep things boiling by accusing ethnic Chinese traders of practising swindling as part their business “culture”.
A local English daily reports that the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) claimed that ethnic Chinese businesses regularly cheat Malay consumers as a legitimate way of earning extra profit.
“We don’t deny that it is really their practice, it has become their culture even in trading,” PPIM president Datuk Nadzim Johan said.
“What more, they feel that with swindling they can earn. Unfortunately, those who always got conned are the Malays,” he added further.
The riot last weekend began after rumours had spread on social media that a Chinese trader had sold a Malay man a counterfeit phone, leading to calls for boycott of “cheating” Chinese traders and the complex itself.
However police had confirmed that investigations reveal that the man had actually been caught stealing a phone and this had caused dissatisfaction amongst his friends who then assaulted the phone store workers and cause damage estimated to be worth RM70,000.
