Jodi Magi had posted on her Facebook page a photograph she had taken of a car parked across two disabled parking spaces outside her apartment in Abu Dhabi, to highlight the inconsiderate driver's actions but instead she gets arrested for "writing bad words on social media".
The 39-year-old Australian graphic designer who has been teaching in Abu Dhabi since 2012 took the photograph back in February this year but when she appeared in court on July 12 to pay a fine, she was instead put in custody.
"I have zero idea [what I have done wrong]. I used the internet.
"No one's talking to me. No one's telling me what's going on," she said, according to the ABC Radio report on Monday which mentioned that Jodi was speaking to them from the back of a police van.
The report which received media headlines worldwide also mentioned that the 'offensive' photo Jodi posted appeared to have been removed from her Facebook page as well.
A follow-up report by ABC with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on Tuesday mentioned that Jodi was 'subject to the laws of UAE (United Arab Emirates)' pending deportation.
Early this morning, Jodi had shared the good news of her deportation on her Facebook, announcing that she had been taken to the airport late Tuesday and flown out of the country, currently in transit in Laos.
"After 53 hours in custody, having been shackled at the ankles, strip-searched, blood tested, forced to sleep on a concrete floor without a mattress or pillow and having no access to toilet paper or eating utensils, I can happily say I AM SAFE & OUT OF JAIL AND ABU DHABI!" she wrote, while sharing stories about other women she met during her short imprisonment.
"I know 1000% after hearing their stories that I would never have been released in such a speedy fashion without a) my Australian nationality, b) the media coverage (surreal), c) the belated efforts of the embassy and d) all of the support from my friends as well as people I have never even met."
