PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has upheld a two-year jail sentence for a 25-year-old woman, charged with attempting to marry a militant to support the Islamic State (IS) movement.
The appeal by the prosecution for a heavier sentence was dismissed on Thursday by a three-man panel lead by Justice Mohtarudin Baki.
This is the first IS-related case to be heard in the Court of Appeal.
Ummi Kalsom Bahak (pic), 25, had been charged on Nov 1, 2014 with offering support, including agreeing to marry a known militant by the name of Aqif Huessin Rahaizat, 25, by boarding an AirAsia flight to Brunei and eventually to Istanbul, Turkey.
The credit control assistant who worked in Damansara was arrested at the KLIA2 Immigration counter at about 5.20am on Oct 5 last year.
In April, she was sentenced to two years in jail by a High Court.
The woman, who is the third of six siblings, was charged under Section 130J of the Penal Code for aiding and assisting in terror activities.
She faced an alternative charge of flying from KLIA2 to Brunei to give support to IS by entering Syria after flying from Brunei to Istanbul and to get married to Aqif Huessin for the benefit of the militant group.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurshafini Mustafha prosecuted the case while Ummi Kalsom was represented by Datuk Hanif Hassan.
