Opposition proposing to move a vote of no-confidence

PETALING JAYA: The Opposition is proposing to move a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when Parliament sits again.
According to Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, MPs from Barisan Nasional who love the country should also support the motion.
“We have not set any timeframe to table the motion, which can be done in the next Parliament sitting or outside of it.
“Of course, we need the numbers and that is why we are making an open invitation to all MPs, including those from Barisan Nasional.
“If we sit down and wait for Umno to do it, it would never happen,” he said during a press conference here yesterday.
The statement of intent was signed by 17 MPs and leaders from PKR, DAP, and Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB), and was read out by GHB’s Mohamad Sabu.
In the statement, the MPs called for the setting up of a transitional government and to appoint “an interim prime minister” to govern for a year before calling for the next general election.
The MPs agreed to appoint an elder statesman to replace Najib, and the candidate can be from any party, including Umno.
They also said the transitional government should use the breathing space to reform important institutions to ensure fair elections, resolve pressing issues such as 1MDB, and revise economic policies which are a burden to the people.
It is learnt a delegation will be formed to start meeting certain MPs to convince them to support the motion.
To the question why PAS MPs were not in the list, Mohamad said the question should be posed to the Islamist party.
However, he said PAS is welcome to support the motion so that there could be a “finality to the full blown crisis”.
DAP’s Tony Pua said there should be a new alignment of progressive leaders and that all political players must join hands for a new political culture.
“The situation now is akin to a repeat of the leadership crisis in 1998.
“Opposition MPs will not take it lying down if there are attempts to put us behind bars and suppress press freedom,” he said, adding that there must not be any partisan politics and voters should demand their respective MPs to support the motion to remove Najib.
The signatories are Mohamad Sabu, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Khalid Samad, Saari Sungib, Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud, Hanipa Maidin, Dr Hatta Ramli Kamarudin Jaffar, Hasnul Baharuddin, Izham Hashim, Tony Pua, Teresa Kok, Liew Chin Tong, Rafizi Ramli, Datuk Saifuddin Nasution, Sim Tze Tzin, and Wong Chen.
