We can imagine that festive occasions like Hari Raya would be quite a race for companies to put out their best ads.
As agencies scramble to pitch their best works, we have to admit though, the standards have reached an inevitable new benchmark with some really outstanding ones this year.
But then again, there are those that have failed miserably – like the one above by Ambi Pur Malaysia (whose parent company is P&G).
Perhaps their creative team ran out of juices due to the fasting month, and only managed to come up with this rather appalling ad.
It doesn’t take an advertising genius to see that the ad is wrong on so many levels.
1. It is clearly badly photoshopped and badly edited from a stock photo
2. Are these 'Malaysians' celebrating Raya perhaps in America as we see the left-hand drive, which is not the typical portrayal of a Malaysian family car
3. We all know who and what doesn’t belong in the photo? The woman in headscarf, the ‘ketupat’ and ‘kuah kacang’, the three Malay faces (which probably was just taken from someone’s Facebook)
4. Not only is the Malay man’s face distracting, his arms are just too hairy, could it be purposely 'enhanced'?
5. The tagline: ‘Bawa pulang perisa Aidilfitri, bukannya bau makanan’ − which translates to “Bring home the taste of Aidilfitri, not the smell of food”. Did they mean stench of food instead?
(Please feel free to add on to this list)
Naturally, when such ads like these get published on Facebook, we can be rest assured that netizens would be quick to comment, and so they did…
This, of course resulted to Ambi Pur later taking the ad down and replacing it with this one instead...
Nice cover up, but doesn’t it smell like someone’s going to get fired?
