KUALA LUMPUR: A 23-year-old man broke his leg after falling from a mosque minaret in Kampung Baru earlier today.
In the 6.30pm incident, the man believed to be mentally unstable had earlier climbed on the outer part of the minaret.
However, the reason behind his action, which drew the attention of over 50 members of the public who watched in horror, is yet to be known.
The New Straits Times received a video, captured by one of the witnesses, which had been circulating via Whatsapp chat application.
The 1-minute and eight-second footage shows the victim holding onto a ledge, some 30m high, on the minaret while witnesses were heard panicking over the possibility of him falling to his death.
At minute 1:03, the victim who looked like he was trying to climb up the ledge suddenly loses his grip and fell.
The video also captured the spectators screaming in anguish upon seeing the man falling.
The NST went to the scene before being told by a police officer that the victim only suffered a broken leg.
It is learnt that he could still talk when paramedics arrived. He was then rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
