Malaysia’s top junior shuttler Cheam June Wei struck gold at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing with the help of Hong Kong’s Ng Tsz Yau when the duo win the mixed doubles final on Friday.
In the final they beat the Japanese-Taiwanese combination of Kanta Tsuneyama and Lee Chia Hsin 21-14, 23-21.
However, the gold medal will not be counted in their country’s medal tally as they competed in the mixed doubles under the mixed National Olympic Committees (NOCs) which was introduced when the inaugural YOG were held in Singapore in 2010.
In the semi-finals June We-Tsz Yau defeated Thailand’s Mel Narongrit and China’s Qin Jinjing 21-11, 21-7.
June Wei, a quarter-finalist at this year’s World Junior Championships held in Alor Star earlier this year, failed to reach the boys’ singles quarter-finals wen he lost to India’s Aditya Joshi in a rubber set 22-20, 18-21, 12-21.
