PETALING JAYA: Malaysia strongly condemns the actions of Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, saying the world is horrified by their brutality.
“The actions of the Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria and Iraq run counter to our faith, our culture, and our common humanity,” said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on his 1Malaysia website.
He said Muslims around the world had reacted in horror to reports of mass executions, killings of civilians and evidence of brutality.
“They are against the teachings of the Prophet, a man of peace and moderation; and against Islamic law, which prizes the protection of life above all.
“We deplore those responsible and call on the international community to act in concert to prevent further violence,” added Najib.
The Prime Minister said extremists saw opportunity when states failed, or were broken by war.
“They prey on the differences between people, using faith as a cover for atrocities. But they do not speak for us,” said Najib.
He said that it was necessary to “fight extremism with moderation” and work to rebuild the bonds between war-torn communities.
“Around the world, the majority of Muslims seek to live their lives free from violence. We do not recognise the vision of our faith being forced on innocent civilians – whether Sunni, Syiah, or Christian – over the barrel of a gun,” said Najib.
