PETALING JAYA: A 24-year-old bogus cop ran out of luck after he was arrested while attempting to swindle money out of a woman along Jalan Kewajipan, Bandar Sunway here.
Subang Jaya Deputy OCPD Supt Tan Ah Chua said on Thursday the case was first brought to police’s attention by a 40-year-old salesman who had fallen prey to the extortionist’s tricks at about 6.50am Thursday.
“The salesman was riding his motorcycle along Jalan Subang Utama when another motorcycle started hitting the rear of his vehicle.
"The motorcyclist pulled alongside the salesman's vehicle and introduced himself as a policeman after whom he instructed the latter to stop his motorcycle," he added.
The bogus cop then confiscated the salesman’s keys and placed them into the compartment box of his motorcycle.
Supt Tan said the fake policeman then demanded to see the man’s identification card and driver’s license.
“He also took RM100 from the salesman, who was taken aback when he saw an 11-inch knife in the compartment box as he reached out for his keys.
"The bogus cop removed the knife from the box and brandished it at the salesman before speeding off with the latter’s money, keys and Lenovo phone," he explained.
The salesman lodged a report at the Bandar Sunway police station.
Supt Tan said policemen encountered the bogus cop while he was in the midst of extorting money from a woman along Jalan Kewajipan in SS13 on the same afternoon.
“They arrested him after noticing that he matched the description provided by the salesman.
“He confessed to using the same method on other victims,” he added.
The bogus cop, who had no previous criminal records, was apprehended with his remand starting on Friday.
The case has been classified armed robbery under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code and Section 107 of the same code for abetment.
