KUALA LUMPUR: The man who allegedly set his former girlfriend on fire was arrested at Hutan Melintang, Perak early Wednesday.
Saliza Saidin and her 16-month-old daughter are still in critical condition after her former boyfriend allegedly set her room on fire Tuesday morning.
“We detained the suspect at 3am in Taman Desa Bernam Indah in Hutan Melintang,” Acting City CID chief Asst Comm Khairi Ahrasa told a press conference Wednesday.
He added the unemployed man, 27, was found with a bag containing 2.15 grams of marijuana at the time of the arrest.
“The suspect has a previous record of drug possession.
“He will undergo a drug test to ascertain if he was under the influence of drugs,” he said.
He added the suspect has been remanded until Jan 29 to facilitate investigations.
“Initial investigations revealed that the victim, a single mother, was in a six-month relationship with the suspect.
“Witness statements indicate that the former lovers were always fighting. The suspect was always borrowing money from Saliza,” he said.
ACP Khairi said the suspect might have gotten angry on the night of the fire when Saliza refused to lend him money.
“It might have been the motive behind the act of arson.
“We are investigating the case under Section 436 of the Penal Code for arson and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder,” he said adding that, all three family members are receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL).
ACP Khairi explained that Saliza’s 62-years-old mother, Som Dollah, has recovered and is being treated as an oustation patient while the arm of Saliza’s baby daughter was badly burnt but they have all survived the incident.
