10 arrested in connection with murder of university student

MIRI: Police here carried out raids over the past two days, leading to the arrests of 10 youths linked to the murder of a 19-year-old Curtin Sarawak university student.
The special task force probing the murder of diploma student Mu Tshun Vui from Sandakan, Sabah, who was killed on Jan 4, rounded up the youths aged between 20 and 30 in Lutong and Taman Tunku here.

Among the nine male youths arrested was a foreigner.
Mu was found beaten to death in the house he and four other students were renting in the Desa Senadin residential estate in Kuala Baram district, located some 20km north of the city centre.
The house is located less than one kilometre away from the Curtin Sarawak campus where Mu was studying.
Police believed the murder was committed following a break-in.
Miri Police Chief Asst Comm Mun Kock Keong told a press conference Tuesday that police are currently carrying out a manhunt for another key suspect, an Iban by the name of George Kallang, 31, said to be from the Tudan 6 squatter resettlement scheme in the Kuala Baram district.

"Following the murder of the student, the task force formed to investigate the case has been working day and night for the past nine days to track down possible suspects, he said adding that those investigating the case had gone without sleep for the past two to three days.
"We have recovered a gas cylinder, believed to be the one missing from the house where the murder happened and seized three motorbikes believed to have been used in the case.
"Preliminary investigations show that some of the arrested suspects have previous criminal records," he said, adding that the police would seek a court order to remand the 10 arrested for further investigations.
ACP Mun called on members of the public to aid police in tracing Kallang, who is still on the run, saying that he could have crucial links to the murder.

ACP Mun said mobile patrols in the residential areas had been increased, especially those with a large student population.
