KUALA LUMPUR: A gunman, foiled by a remote-controlled door when trying to enter the office of a licenced moneylender with three others, fired shots into the office.
He then aimed his bullets at the door lock in a desperate attempt to flee when the intruders found themselves trapped between the front grille and the office door.
An employee at the office in Jalan Ipoh, fearing for the safety of other workers and customers there, eventually used the remote device to open the door.
The intruders quickly fled empty-handed.
Closed-circuit TV (CCTV) footage showed a woman nearby, who police believed might also be involved in the failed attempt to rob the company.
No casualties were reported in the 2.45pm incident yesterday.
In the incident, the four men had gone to the moneylender’s office, located on the first floor of a shoplot, on the pretext of seeking a loan.
However, when they passed through the remote-operated front door, an employee who was suspicious of their intention did not allow the men to go further into the office.
The suspects then found themselves stuck on the stairwell between the front grille and the office door.
Angry at being denied entry, one of the would-be robbers took out a pistol and fired four shots in the direction of four employees and a child in the office.
The shots did not hit anyone.
The man then fired two more shots at the door lock but failed to open it.
The four were only able to escape after one of the employees opened the door by remote control.
City deputy CID chief Asst Comm Khairy Ahrasa said CCTV footage indicated the incident lasted three minutes.
“Thankfully, no one was hurt and nothing was taken,” he said when met at the scene yesterday.
ACP Khairy said the four men, believed to be in their 30s, might have had a female accomplice.
“We can see a woman arriving at about the same time as the men from a different vehicle. She stayed outside during the incident as if she was keeping watch.
“It is possible that this woman, believed to be in her late 20s, may also be involved,” he said.
It is learnt that this was the second failed robbery attempt at the moneylender’s office. However, the owner did not report the first incident.
