PUTRAJAYA: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was summoned to record his previous statement as a suspect, not a witness.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki said, this is based on the evidence that the cash found is related to Ismail Sabri.

"In this case, I can say that he is a suspect. This is because he has been ordered to declare his assets under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009. "Secondly, when he found these money, he (Ismail Sabri) was one of those linked, so we need to get an explanation from him about the discovery of this money," he said at a press conference here on Monday.

On Sunday, MACC confirmed that it had seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies and seized 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars estimated to be worth RM7 million.

It is related to the corruption and money laundering investigation involving Ismail Sabri.

The seizure was carried out during a search of a residence and three premises believed to be used as a 'safehouse'.

MACC said that earlier on Dec 11, Ismail Sabri was ordered to declare his assets under Section 36 (1) of the MACC Act 2009 and this was done by Ismail Sabri officially on Feb 10.

According to MACC, the investigation focused on expenditure and procurement of funds for promotional and publicity purposes when he led the country.
