NARATHIWAT: Twenty-three people, including seven policemen, were injured in a bomb blast near a supermarket in Bannang Sata district, Yala Province, last night.

Bannang Sata Police Chief, Col. Pol. Ranon Surawit, said the incident occurred at 8.20pm local time and was believed to have been carried out by an armed group which was being tracked by the authorities.

"At the time of the incident, several policemen were on patrol in two four-wheel drive vehicles. When the police vehicle arrived at the supermarket, a bomb hidden in a nearby area and believed to have been activated using a remote control exploded suddenly," he told the media after visiting the scene here on Sunday. He said all the victims, comprising seven policemen and 16 members of the public, had been taken to Bannang Sata Hospital for treatment, and police investigations were ongoing.

The blast came a day before former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was on a working visit to Thailand's southern province in an effort to find a solution to the long-running conflict.

The visit was Thaksin's first visit to the region since being appointed as an informal adviser to the ASEAN chairman, as well as his first visit to the region in more than 20 years since his administration was ousted in 2006.
