GEORGE TOWN: Several roads in Penang will be closed and diverted in conjunction with the Penang Bridge International Marathon 2023 (PBIM 2023) which involves a distance of 42 kilometers (km) starting at night Saturday until this Sunday morning.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said the running event will pass through the Persiaran Bayan Indah area, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway, along the route Penang Bridge< a i=2> and Perai.

"Closing and detours will be closed in stages from 11pm Saturday (16 Dec) to 10am Sunday (17 Dec) and the public is advised to obey the instructions of the police on duty and plan their journey," he said in a statement on Thursday.

He said for the North East region, the road that will be closed is along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, which is from the Sungai Pinang Road Intersection to Bayan Indah Bayan and from George Town to Bayan Lapas and the Penang Bridge.

He said for the South West region, all the roads that are closed are concentrated in the Queensbay area and the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway leading to George-Town, while all vehicles heading to the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) and Batu Maung, will be diverted to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge.

Khaw said in the Seberang Perai Tengah district, vehicles heading to the island from the North-South Highway will be diverted to the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge.

He said that road users who plan to use the roads involved, are asked to plan their journey in advance and use other alternative routes and obey the instructions of the police on duty because they expect the flow of traffic to increase following the school holiday season.

"People who wish to witness or participate in PBIM, are advised to park their vehicles in the area provided by the organizers and are prohibited from parking along the roads involved in the PBIM 2023 running participants' route.

"They are also advised to use public transport provided by the organizers to avoid congestion," he said.

PBIM is the largest annual sports event in the north of the Peninsula and it is understood that more than 20,000 participants have registered to participate.

Race categories include Full Marathon (42km), Half Marathon (21km) and 10km Run (Open/Junior).
