KUALA LUMPUR: The Cyprus Cabinet on Thursday reportedly revoked the citizenship status granted to fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low.

According to a report by The Cyprus Mail, sources confirmed the cancellation of his passport and said the decision was made based on the recommendation of Interior Minister Nicos Nouris.

Before that, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported that the decision was made after the Minister of Home Affairs received new information about Jho Low.

CNA claimed that the Cypriot government in March realized it lacked evidence to accept Jho Low's citizenship before the Ministry of Interior contacted Interpol to obtain additional data.

Based on the Interpol data, the ministry then recommended the cancellation of Jho Low's passport.

The Cyprus Mail added that, despite being labeled a "high-risk individual", a party in Cyprus filed a citizenship application on behalf of Jho Low.

The portal also claims that the businessman transferred almost 6 million euros to an account at the Bank of Cyprus, in addition to buying a beachfront bungalow in Ayia Napa for 5 million euros and getting citizenship a few days later.

Jho Low was granted Cypriot citizenship in 2015.

Jho Low is being hunted for being linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and SRC International Sdn Bhd fund embezzlement case.
