CHINA provided conditional approval for Paxlovid pills, Pfizer's COVID-19 drug, to treat adults with mild to moderate diseases, as well as a high risk of developing severe symptoms.
The National Medical Products Administration said further research on the drug should be carried out and handed over to regulators.
Paxlovid's use is so far permitted in several countries including the United States and Israel.
Meanwhile, the European Union allows member states to use it before official approval, as an emergency measure against the Omicron variant.
Unlike the COVID-19 vaccine, the drug does not target the ever-growing spike protein, which coronavirus uses to attack cells.
So far, China has not approved any foreign-produced COVID-19 vaccines
