SHAH ALAM: Any party that promotes the sale of Ivermectin as an antidote to COVID-19 can be subject to stern action under the Poisons Act 1952.

President of the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Association (PFM), Amrahi Buang said the offense was based on the Poisons Act 1952 on the sale of the drug.

"When it is not in accordance with the law, anyone who does this is illegal and can be punished. It doesn’t matter if it’s a doctor, a pharmacist or anyone.

"Pharmacists or doctors need to inform patients that this drug cannot be used to treat COVID-19," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian .

On July 27, the Minister of Health, Datuk Seri Dr. Adham Baba said, so far, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has given special approval for the use of this drug off label for clinical studies only.

Meanwhile, Amrahi also slammed the widespread sale of the drug, including online.

“This medicine is available online and if imported, it can go through various stages such as customs.

"While the drug has not been approved for use for COVID-19 treatment in this country," he said.

Commenting further, Amrahi said, his party was also worried that the purchase of Ivermectin by consumers either abroad or online was a fake drug.

In this regard, he also urged the government to take action against the sale of this drug either online or brought in from abroad.
