Japan's new COVID-19 cases top 10,000 for 1st time, Malaysia reports 17,170 new infections

HONG KONG, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Japan's new COVID-19 cases topped 10,000 for the first time on Thursday while Malaysia reported 17,170 new cases in the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries.
A total of 10,110 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Japan until 5:30 p.m. local time with a record number of 3,865 daily COVID-19 cases confirmed in Tokyo, local media reported.
Three prefectures near Tokyo will jointly request the Japanese central government to put them into regions under the emergency state following a recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, according to Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai, local media reported.
Malaysia reported 17,170 new COVID-19 infections, the health ministry said, bringing the national total to 1,078,646. Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that 32 of the new cases are imported and 17,138 are local transmissions.
The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 5,735 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,572,287. The death toll climbed to 27,577 after 176 more patients died from the viral disease.
China delivered an additional batch of Sinovac CoronaVac vaccines to the Philippines to support the Southeast Asian country's inoculation campaign against the pandemic.
