30/06/2020 09:43 PM

KUALA LUMPUR June 30 -- Police have recorded the statement of former Women, Family and Community Development deputy minister Hannah Yeoh in connection to a social media post deemed seditious recently.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said findings of the investigations would be forwarded to prosecutors for further action.

“We will submit the investigation papers to the public prosecutor for a decision to be made,” he told a media conference in Bukit Aman here today.

On June 23, Yeoh, who is also Segambut MP, was summoned to Bukit Aman over a social media post related to child marriage and deemed inflammatory.

In a separate development, Huzir said police will complete its investigations into the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim as requested by the Deputy Public Prosecutor.

"We will complete it (investigations) very soon and we hold discussions with representatives from Attorney General's Chambers for further action,” he said.

On June 21, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) said the police were still investigating the case to identify the perpetrators and the AGC will take further action based on the investigations.

Adib was part of a nine-man firefighting team from the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Department that responded to a fire at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, USJ 25, Subang Jaya, where rioters were protesting its relocation on Nov 27, 2018.

During the riot, Adib sustained severe injuries and was hospitalised for three weeks, before succumbing to his injuries on Dec 17, at the National Heart Institute (IJN).

On Sept 27 last year, the Coroner’s Court ruled that Adib’s death was due to murder by two or more persons.

Former 1MDB CEO admits he fell for Jho Low’s ruse ( Video )

30/06/2020 07:12 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 Jun -- Former 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) chief executive officer Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi told the High Court here today that he fell for the ruse created by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, in setting up Brazen Sky Ltd for the purpose of repatriating the sovereign wealth fund.

He told the court this when lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, representing former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, suggested to him that eventhough Jho Low said the company was created for the purpose of repatriating 1MDB's money, it was actually to give the appearance that some legitimate money was coming into Brazen Sky.

Brazen Sky Ltd is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) which was set-up on July 12, 2012, for the purpose of repatriating 1MBD’s money.

However, the ninth prosecution witness said he was not aware of it at that time.

He said this while under cross-examination by Muhammad Shafee in Najib’s RM2.3 billion 1MDB graft trial.

Muhammad Shafee: Why the need for Brazen Sky? It (the money) can just be transferred straight into 1MDB's account?

Shahrol Azral: Jho Low told me that the market conditions were unfavourable for 1MDB to liquidate all of the units at once and proposed the liquidation to be done bit by bit.

Muhammad Shafee: But in hindsight, you now know that this was untrue, and the fund was being managed by Jho Low.

Shahrol Azral: Yes.

The witness also said it was Jho Low’s specialty in making people feel comfortable that he (Jho Low) was acting in their best interest.

The counsel then suggested that his client, Najib, was also duped by Jho Low, to which Shahrol Azral said he could not comment.

Towards the end of the evening proceedings, Muhammad Shafee asked to continue his cross-examination on the witness tomorrow as he was moving to a bigger area.

In response to this, Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah asked the counsel how much longer would he take to cross-examine Shahrol Azral , and Muhammad Shafee said he would take another three weeks.

Najib, 67, faces four charges of using his position to obtain bribes totalling RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount.

The trial continues tomorrow.

“We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives. But the hard reality is this is not even close to being over.”

Tengku Adnan handed over more than RM1 million to assist BN machinery in Sungai Besar, Kuala Kangsar by-elections,

30/06/2020 04:34 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 -- An UMNO divisional leader told the High Court here today that Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had handed over to him cash of more than RM1 million for voluntary activities to assist the Barisan Nasional (BN) machinery in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections in 2016.

Simpang Renggam UMNO leader Datuk Zakaria Dullah, 51, said the money, totalling RM1,007,600, was given to him at the UMNO Secretary-General's Office at the Putra World Trade Center (PWTC) after the former Federal Territories Minister told him to prepare a budget for the activities concerned.

“Besides the RM1,007,600, Datuk Seri (Tengku Adnan) also gave me RM40,000 for my personal expenses as the coordinator for the two by-elections.

"Datuk Seri gave me the money (RM40,000) to ensure that I would not use the RM1,007,600 for my personal expenses. The money was given by Datuk Seri personally,” he said during examination-in-chief by lawyer Datuk Tan Hock Chuan, representing Tengku Adnan in a corruption case involving RM2 million.

Zakaria, who is the fourth defence witness, when reading out his witness statement, said the activities carried out included volunteers holding tuition classes for school students, seminars, gotong-royong, sport events and religious events, such as breaking of fast and “sahur” (pre-dawn meal during fasting month).

“In Sungai Besar, there were 600 volunteers involved at 30 district polling centres (PDM) and in Kuala Kangsar, there were 520 volunteers involving 26 PDMs," he added.

Meanwhile, to a question by deputy public prosecutor Julia Ibrahim, Zakaria, who is the last witness to testify in the defence trial, said he did not keep records of the expenses incurred.

Julia: For both the by-elections, how much was actually spent?

Zakaria: Normally, every ringgit is spent. If it is not enough, we ask for more. if there is extra, we keep.

He also told the court that it was a normal practice in UMNO in not keeping records or documents on expenses for elections.

Following which, the defence closed its case.

The hearing was before judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan, who then set Sept 11 to hear the oral submissions by both parties.

Cradle Fund: evidence room used only for Nazrin case exhibits

29/06/2020 08:06 PM

SHAH ALAM, June 29 -- The High Court in which the murder trial of Nazrin Hassan is being heard was told today that only evidence taken from the late Cradle Fund chief executive officer’s room were stored in the Fire and Rescue Department’s temporary evidence room around June 2018.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department investigations officer Che Daud Adli Yusof @ Che Man, the 23rd prosecution witness, said this was because he has to be informed about each piece of evidence stored in the room.

“There were 192 fire cases in June 2018 that involved structural fires or home fires.

“But in that month (June), the temporary room was used only once to store evidence and those were the exhibits for this case (Nazrin trial),” he said during cross-examination by defence counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah before Judge Datuk Ab Karim Ab Rahman.

Muhammad Shafee had earlier asked if the room had been also used to store evidence from other cases.

Che Daud Adli also told the court that the temporary case evidence room at the Fire Investigations Division of the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department was under his supervision,

“I am the only one with the keys to the room and any officer or personnel who wants to use the room must contact me first.

“I am very sure no one else had stored any other case exhibits in the room as there had been no requests for it,” he testified.

Che Daud Adli said throughout his role of supervising the room since 2016, there had been no incidents in which evidence had gone missing or replaced.

On March 12, 2019, Nazrin's wife Samirah Muzaffar, 44, a former senior executive at the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia, and two teenagers, aged 17 and 14, were charged, along with Indonesian citizen Eka Wahyu Lestari, who is still at large, with Nazrin’s murder.

They were alleged to have committed the offence at a house in Mutiara Homes, Mutiara Damansara between 11.30 pm on June 13, 2018 and 4 am on June 14, 2018.

The trial continues Friday.
