KUALA LUMPUR: Anwar Ibrahim claimed that prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad wanted him to sack his deputy Azmin Ali over a gay sex video earlier this year, according to PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin.

She said Anwar made the claim at a private meeting between the two of them at Parliament House about four months ago.

“I said if it’s true Mahathir asked to sack him then why did he come out with four statements saying Azmin didn’t need to go on leave? After that, he said, ‘You don’t know Mahathir, he’s like that’.

“So I told Anwar, ‘I don’t know Mahathir, I also don’t know you'”.

Zuraida made her assertions in a speech to supporters at the 2030 Shared Prosperity Vision dinner here, viewed as a rival gathering to the PKR national congress.

She claimed that Anwar had informed her that police had confirmed Azmin as being the other man in the gay sex video with former PKR Santubong Youth leader Haziq Aziz.

Haziq has confessed to being one of the two men in the video. Police have been conducting an investigation into the allegations.

Zuraida recalled what she said to Anwar about the video. “I said if it’s Azmin then let the police investigate. If it’s true, then Azmin has to accept it. But the police haven’t finished their investigations yet,” she said.

Anwar also expressed his symphathy for his deputy. “I said if you pity him then help him!,” Zuraida said.

Azmin has strongly denied the allegations made about the video, saying it was released with the intention of killing his political career.

Police said last month that an expert from the United States had been engaged to verify the authenticity of the video.
