JOHOR BARU: Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has revealed that he had retracted the “Datin Paduka” title of a polar explorer.
The matter involving explorer Sharifah Mazlina Syed Abdul Kadir was exposed in a post on the Sultan's official Facebook, where a statement was issued by the Johor Royal Court Council and signed by its president Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Ramli.
"The Johor Royal Court Council would like to inform that a person by the name of Sharifah Mazlina Syed Abdul Kadir, who is preparing for an expedition to Antarctica, has used the title of 'Datin Paduka' in her affairs.
"The Johor Royal Court Council confirms that the titles of 'Darjat Mahkota Johor Yang Amat Mulia Pangkat Pertama Dato' Sri Paduka Mahkota Johor (SPMJ)' and 'Pangkat Kedua Dato' Paduka Mahkota Johor (DPMJ)' that were given to her had been retracted and canceled in June 2010.
"Thus, she could not and does not have the right to use it in her affairs," read the statement released here on Wednesday (Dec 18).
Documents of the official retraction and response from Sharifah Mazlina, acknowledging it and giving up the titles in 2010 were also shared.
Sharifah Mazlina received the title of SPMJ on Nov 2005 and DPMJ in March 2004.
She was the first Asian woman to reach the South Pole in April 2004, as well as the first Asian woman to complete a Pole-to-Pole mission in 2007.
Sharifah Mazlina, who is also the All Women Expedition to Antarctica (Aweta) mentor is expected to go for an expedition to Antarctica this month.
