BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have arrested the driver of a car involved in Sunday’s accident on the Penang Bridge which caused another vehicle to plunge into the sea, killing its driver.

Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the 21-year-old man who had been driving the Toyota Vios was arrested at the district police headquarters at about 2am today.

“The police have recorded a statement from the man, who is employed at a hairdressing salon,” he said.

The accident which took place at KM4 of the bridge at 2.54am on Sunday saw a collision between the Toyota Vios and a Mazda CX-5. The vehicles had been heading from Penang island to the mainland.

The impact of the crash saw the SUV fall into the sea with its driver, 20-year-old college student Moey Yun Peng, inside. The vehicle, with Moey’s body still in the driver’s seat, was retrieved from the seabed yesterday.

Nik Ros Azhan said police had also recorded statements from another 15 people, including members of Moey’s family, his friends and eyewitnesses.

He said Moey’s post-mortem, conducted at the Seberang Jaya Hospital, showed that he had drowned.

The case has been classified under driving in a dangerous manner and causing death.
