BAGAN SERAI: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has blacklisted and issued arrest warrants for 39,311 drivers nationwide for failing to settle their Automatic Awareness Security System (Awas) notices of summons.

Bernama reported that 95,850 summons notices were issued following the installation of 45 Awas cameras in September last year – but only 10,876 fines have been paid as of Jan 21.

“Traffic offenders were given 60 days to settle their summonses, beginning from the date they were issued.

“(Subsequent to the 60-day period), the JPJ has taken stern action by taking the cases to court for prosecution,” JPJ director general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid said yesterday.

He said that as of December last year, 39,358 drivers have been prosecuted in court.
