KUALA LUMPUR: Police opened fire at a Toyota Hilux in a dramatic car chase from Jalan Kuching to Bukit Kiara here this afternoon.
Sentul police chief S. Shanmugamoorthy Chinniah said several shots were fired at the vehicle, believed to be driven by a local man, after he refused to stop for checks, in the 4.20pm incident.
“The police patrol unit suspected something amiss when they spotted the vehicle and ordered it to stop. Instead of stopping, the driver sped off toward Bukit Kiara.
“The team gave chase and during the pursuit, the suspect even tried to force the police car off the road. He even threw a cutter at the police car upon reaching the Bukit Kiara tunnel" he said.
Shanmugamoorthy said the team had to open fire and one of the shots hit the pick-up truck's tyres, causing the vehicle to skid and slammed into a road divider.
He said the suspect then got out of the vehicle and tried to run but was apprehended shortly after.
Police later found some pills, believed to be Eramin 5, in the vehicle, which had one of its number plate alphabets covered with black tape.
He added that checks showed the suspect, in his 30s, had several previous criminal records. -- Bernama
