GEORGE TOWN: The 21-year-old Toyota Vios driver, whose vehicle collided with a Mazda CX-5 SUV on the Penang Bridge, has tested positive for marijuana.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said this after police received the driver's blood test results today.
He said the blood test report also showed that he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, which saw the SUV plunging into the sea.
"The Toyota Vios driver is receiving treatment at a private hospital after suffering injuries to his head, legs and arms.
"Earlier, he was allowed to go home after receiving treatment at the Seberang Jaya Hospital. He later fainted at home and was rushed to the private hospital," he said.
The driver of the SUV, identified as student Moey Yun Peng, 20, was headed to Perai when it was involved in a collision with the Toyota Vios at 2.54am on Sunday.
The impact caused the Mazda CX-5 to skid to the right and flip over the Penang Bridge guard rail, before plunging into the sea.
The search and rescue operation for the college student was resumed at 7am today.
Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan revealed that Moey and the Toyota Vios driver, who works as a hairstylist, are childhood friends.
He said the two were on their home after attending their friend's birthday party at a club at Chulia Street here.
"The two, who live on the mainland, was at the party with five other friends, who live on the island," he said, adding that police are investigating whether the two were racing each other on the Penang Bridge.
