GEORGE TOWN: A 20-year-old woman moved from Johor to Penang, thinking of starting a new life with her boyfriend.
Her 30-year-old beau found her a job at a shopping complex after she moved in with him in May.
But she had to surrender her RM900 monthly salary to the jobless man.
By June, the physical abuses started. The woman, known only as Yih, was forced to go hungry, beaten up and had her arms cut with a blade.
Last Thursday, however, she was scalded with hot water and beaten after she told the man that she had no money to give him as she had stopped working.
The man then flew into a rage and assaulted her with an iron rod.
Yih sustained injuries to her head, arms and hands.
Later that night, she was kicked out of the house.
Despite her injuries, Yih returned to the shopping complex to look for a job, where a noodle seller sensed something amiss.
She sought the assistance of FeedThePoor, a charitable group, after she learnt what had happened to Yih.
A police report has been lodged, and Yih is now warded at the Penang Hospital.
It is believed that Yih befriended the man through a matchmaking column in a magazine back in March.
After communicating over the telephone for two months, she moved to Penang.
According to a vernacular news report, Yih got pregnant in June but was forced by the man to abort.
Yih, who only has primary school education, told the Chinese daily that she did not dare to run away or lodge a police report as she was afraid of him.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid confirmed the case and said the man was arrested on Dec 24 and has been remanded until Friday.
