Penang shooting: Bodyguard slapped with charges, faces death penalty






GEORGE TOWN: The bodyguard who allegedly shot his boss at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway two weeks ago, was slapped with nine charges in three courts here on Wednesday.

Ja'afar Halid (pic), 37, faces charges for three murders and five attempted murders, and one charge for voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon.

He was charged with killing Ong Teik Kwong, 32, entertainer Choi Hon Ming, 32, and flower supplier M. Senthil, 38. No plea was recorded.

He was charged with committing the deeds by shooting the back of Ong’s head, Choi’s left chest and right thigh, and Senthil’s left chest using a Glock 19 Gen 4 firearm, on Dec 1 between 7.15pm to 7.30pm at the intersection to the first Penang Bridge at Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.



The offence, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

The bodyguard pleaded guilty at a Sessions Court here with the attempted murders of K. Arivarni, 33, Nurul Huda Ab Aziz, 38, Lee Hong Boon, 56, Mohamad Amirul Amin Mohamed Amer, 28, and Puoh Bee Joo, 32, at the same place and time.

The offence, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum jail term of 20 years upon conviction.

At another magistrate’s court, he also admitted to injuring Lim Boon Leng, 32, by hitting his head using the same gun at the same place and time, an offence that under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years, whipping or fine, or any two of the above.

DPP Nurul Fatin Hussin and DPP Nurul Huda Idris prosecuted.

The accused was unrepresented in the three courts.

At the first court, Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid fixed Jan 16 for case mention pending a chemist report.

Sessions Judge Irwan Suainbon and Magistrate Sharifah Izura Syed Mashor said his pleas were not recorded in their respective courts as they ordered for him to be sent to the Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan, Perak, for a month's psychiatric observation.
