Syed Saddiq humbled after audience with Johor Ruler

PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been left humbled after an audience with Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.
The former national debater was recently invited to Istana Flinstone in Mersing following his open letter to Sultan Ibrahim, where he criticised the royal decree banning street protests in the state.
What followed was a conversation with a truly “people-minded Ruler”, Syed Saddiq revealed in a Facebook posting on Sunday.
“I am honestly touched and humbled that Tuanku and the royal family were willing to meet me and spend time with me, an ordinary citizen.
“Tuanku also took the time to offer advice on the future of Johor and my career. I realise that all of Tuanku’s actions are based on a deep sense of love for his state,” he wrote.
Syed Saddiq, who is a Johorean, said he was treated by the royal family as a Johorean and not as a politician.
He also conveyed his appreciation to Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim for arranging the meeting and labelled the outspoken football club Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) owner a “visionary”.
“I promise to work hard for the development of this country and especially the state of Johor, in line with Tuanku and Tunku’s aspirations,” he added.
In his open letter penned earlier this month, which was posted on Facebook, Syed Saddiq had implored Sultan Ibrahim to reconsider his decree to ban street demonstrations in the state.
The youth activist’s actions were roundly condemned by several local NGOs, while Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said he would be investigated for sedition.
