What a breakthrough for Peng Soon-Liu Ying. Finally, they are in Olympic Games semis.

RIO DE JANEIRO: What a glorious day for Malaysia's Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying!

The top mixed doubles pair Peng Soon-Liu Ying stormed into the semi-finals of the Olympics with a superb 21-17, 21-10 win over Robert Mateusiak-Nadiezda Zieba of Poland in the last eight.

It took them 46 minutes to post their best ever results in the Olympic Games and improve on their record against the Polish pair to 4-2.

It was also a sweet revenge for the Malaysians as they had lost to Mateusiak-Zieba in the German Open at their last meeting in February.

The Malaysians will take on Xu Chen-Ma Jin of China in the semi-finals.

Team manager Ng Chin Chai said: "Our mixed doubles pair have come of age since the last Olympic Games (in London in 2012). They lost all their group matches in the last Olympics and now, they are in the semi-finals."

"They must believe and play with a positive mindset in the semis to assure us a medal. As a team manager, I believe that Peng Soon-Liu Ying can."
