Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his fine start to his Manchester United career with a brace that sent Jose Mourinho's side top of the table after two games.
Ibrahimovic headed home a Wayne Rooney cross in the first-half before converting a second-half penalty that had been won by Luke Shaw.
Paul Pogba was lively after being handed his first start since re-joining the Red Devils having missed United's opening day 3-1 victory over Bournemouth through suspension carried over from the Coppa Italia.
Although United had not beaten Southampton at home since 2013, Mourinho's side set a marker by going three points clear at the top of the table with victory.

Then we had the unexpected suspension.
On Friday night it was time for Paul Pogba to do what he's paid £290,000 a week by Manchester United to do.

New signing Paul Pogba made his second debut for Manchester United on Friday night
PASSING
'I expect him to make the correct pass, a good, simple execution and to keep the game fluid,' said Jose Mourinho before Pogba's debut but it wasn't the most auspicious of starts; a stray pass after 20 seconds that allowed Pierre- Emile Hojbjerg to race upfield and almost set up an opening goal for Southampton.
Pogba simple without ever controlling the tempo of the game for United. There were also some clever flighted balls into the box for Ibrahimovic and Mata.

HEADING
Few players can outjump Pogba, especially when he has the benefit of a run-up, and Romeu discovered that to his cost in the third minute when the ball spun up in the air between the two players.
Pogba soared above the 6ft Spaniard who looked like he was rooted to the spot. However, Pogba was annoyed with himself for failing to do better with a header over the bar when Mata picked him out with a corner in the second half.

POWER
Whether it was effortlessly holding off Jordy Clasie on the touchline before bursting away from his opponent, or surging through several opponents while keeping the ball under control, he's a formidable sight.
Pogba's languid style takes him past opponents and on one run he went past four defenders
RUNNING
One run down the left flank in the 23rd minute took him past four defenders. Another, more winding effort to the edge of the box, just before half-time, threatened to carry him through the Saints defence single-handed.
When Pogba is in full flight it will invariably take more than one opponent to stop him.

SHOOTING
Probably not his best attribute, and Mourinho has warned United fans not to expect an avalanche of goals.
One effort from the edge of the box in the 13th minute with very little backlift forced Fraser Forster to gather the ball at the second attempt after Ibrahimovic had cut the ball back from the byline.
But Pogba's big moment arrived in injury-time when he raced onto a pass 20 yards from goal with only Forster to beat and lashed his effort wide. It would have been a fitting end to a fine debut but it wasn't to be.
